Fiber

Natural spider silk is an outstanding fibrous biomaterial with tensile strengths comparable to steel and flexibility comparable to rubber on a weight-to-weight basis. In combining these two properties, silks reveal a toughness that is two to three times that of synthetic fibers such as Nylon or Kevlar. Spider silk is also lightweight, hypoallergenic and completely biodegradable.

AMSilk investigates the production of novel high-performance fibers out of biopolymers that are inspired by natural spider silk to mimic the unique properties of spider silk threads. It is AMSilk´s goal to make these silk fibers available to industry.

AMSilk®-High-Performance Fibers made from spider silk combines different characteristics:

  • high tensile strength and ductility
  • chemically modifiable
  • low-density
  • biocompatible

Applications for Spidersilk fibers and fabrics are boundless. AMSilk focuses on the development of high-performance fibers in segments, where the benefit of silk is significant in comparison to common synthetic fibers.
